General FAQ

  • Why did you become an SLP?

In high school and college I was nanny for the one and only Miss Maddie P! She is one of the most spectacular individuals I have ever met. She had and continues to have multiple difficulties with communication, but she always gets her point across! I saw her struggles and wanted to help her & others be able to communicate more effectively. She continues to be my inspiration.

  • How long have you been doing this?

I have been a licensed SLP for over 6 years. During that time I have worked with individuals with varying degrees of severity in the following areas:

articulation & phonological difficulties, childhood apraxia of speech, early intervention, stuttering, hearing loss, expressive & receptive language difficulties, stroke recovery orofacial myofunctional disorders and lactation concerns.

  • How does this work?

We start with a comprehensive evaluation that includes an in-depth case history. We talk about current strengths and areas of concern. Then we come back to discuss the results and begin working on the treatment plan that will help you meet your needs!

  • What is an orofacial myofunctional disorder?

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are disorders of the muscles and the functions of the face and mouth. OMDs are not typically occurring and may directly or indirectly impact the following:

    Facial growth & development

    Chewing & Swallowing

    Speech Sound Production

    Breathing/Sleeping

    Tongue & Lip Posture

    And More!

  • What causes an OMD?

Structural abnormalities (tooth misalignment, tongue tie, restricted airway due to enlargement of tonsils/adenoids or allergies.)

Negative oral habits such as thumb or finger sucking, teeth clenching/grinding & tongue sucking.

Extended use of a pacifier and/or long-term use of sippy cups

    Hereditary predisposition

  • Do you accept insurance?

We currently accept straight Michigan Medicaid. We are working on becoming “In Network” with several other insurance companies and will be updating when the process is finalized. If we do not accept your insurance, we are able to provide a superbill for you to submit for potential reimbursement. We accept cash, card, & check.

Lactation FAQs

  • When do I need a lactation counselor?

Anytime you have questions regarding preparing for breastfeeding, difficulties with breastfeeding, needing encouragement to continue breastfeeding or when you're unsure of how to wean!

  • I had a difficulty pregnancy...Can I still nurse?

Absolutely! We understand that pregnancy and birth do not always go as planned, but that does not mean you can not have a successful breastfeeding journey.

  • Nursing was fine at first, now it's not working!

Let's get together to talk about that. Sometimes it can be as simple as a change in positioning or needing a boost in your confidence. Other times, there are structural concerns (oral restrictions/ties) that may be causing the difficulty.

  • No one in my family was 'successful' at breastfeeding. Does this mean I'll have problems too?

Absolutely NOT! Every breastfeeding journey is different. Just because your mom/grandma/auntie had a difficult time, that doesn't mean you automatically have to give formula!

  • You keep saying tongue/lip tie... Why hasn't anyone else mentioned it?

Unfortunately, tethered oral tissues (TOTs) are not taught in most medical programs (medical/dental/slp school). It's not that the ties aren't there, but most providers don't understand how to do a comprehensive assessment to check for them and how they are impacting the function of the lip/tongue.

  • What experience do you have with identifying TOTs?

As an orofacial myofunctional therapist, working with TOTs is a large part of what I do. On a personal note, my oldest son's were 'fixed' when he was a day old. But he continued to have lots of difficulty with nursing. When he was 6 months old, I discovered ties that were missed by 5 different medical providers. As you can imagine, I went down the rabbit hole... And haven't made my way out yet! I've spent countless hours researching and identifying ways to help families so they don't have to experience what mine went through.
